James Birdseye McPherson (1828 - 1864) was born in a log cabin just around the bend. This is the McPherson family home built in 1833.
James graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point first in his class. While commanding the Army of the Tennessee after the fall of Vicksburg, he was mortally wounded during the Battle of Atlanta. McPherson was the highest ranking Union officer killed in the Civil War. Items that belonged to the General and his family are showcased. Photographs trace his military career and honor his service. Period furnishings give a glimpse into life in the mid 1800's. General McPherson's funeral and burial was held in the cemetery opposite the family home. A monument was erected in 1881 and restored in 1985. Open by appointment. Individuals and Groups Welcome!.
