The Hayes Presidential Center has a wonderful new program in full swing: 2nd Saturdays R for Kids. This weekend, the theme is Ohio's Link to the Underground Railroad.
Participants will take a simulated journey on the ‘Railroad’ and create a lantern like those used by abolitionists to guide slaves to freedom. Parents and children can work together on decoding lyrics to spirituals from the time period that contained hidden messages.
In addition, participants can write about their experiences in journals they create. The journals are a continuing part of Second Saturdays. At each session, new entries are written and at the conclusion of the nine-part series participants have a remembrance to take home.
Families are not obliged to stay for the entire 3-hours. The format is a “come and go when you want.” The prices includes admission to the Hayes Museum where the special exhibit Buckeye President: Rutherford B. Hayes is on display. Those who have Hayes Presidential Center “Family-level” or above memberships can attend free. Call 419-332-2081, ext. 230 for more information or to register.
